This true championship layout – indeed, it was site of the 2009 Black Mountain Masters, an Asian Tour event won by Swedish star Johan Edfors – is among the best and most challenging golf courses in Thailand. Thanks to the many natural creeks that run through it, and the mountainous backdrops throughout, it’s also one of the most beautiful.

Water comes into play almost from the beginning, at the testing par-5 second, a downhiller from the tee but an uphiller from the fairway. Players must avoid the pond on the right off the tee – and then the creek that crosses the fairway about 40 yards short of the green – to get off to a good start.

The par-5 18th makes for a dramatic closing hole. It plays severely uphill to a green protected by several deep-faced bunkers, just below the clubhouse restaurant’s expansive dining terrace – the perfect perch from which to watch golfers close out their rounds.

The Nicklaus Designed Springfield Royal Country Club

Pineapple patches, bougainvillea beds and, of course, Banyan trees come into play on this hillside course just outside the charming coastal town of Hua Hin, which for almost a century has been the preferred holiday retreat of the Thai Royal Family. The course is fit for a king too, nestled as it is in a mostly-enclosed, bucolic bowl without a home or resort in sight.

The clubhouse, situated on the highest part of the property, offers stunning vistas (especially at sunset) of the Burmese Mountains, while the layout itself provides golfers an undulating journey as difficult as they want it to be. Four sets of well-spaced tees mean the course plays anywhere from 5087 to 7361 yards. Four types of grasses have been used on this wonderful layout, which is exquisitely maintained despite its youth. (The course opened on October 1, 2008).
